How Is a Street-Shoot Dress Different From a Studio Dress?
For a studio shoot, you can choose a dress based purely on how it looks standing still. You only move between poses, the floor is flat, and the air conditioning is on.
The street is different. In a single shoot, you’ll walk through a shopping street, duck into an alley, climb stairs, and cross at a signal. That makes the dress both an outfit and a piece of moving equipment. A long, heavy hem might look beautiful in a photo, but every time you move, it means gathering it up, waiting, and adjusting it again. That time comes straight out of the number of shots we can get.
What Actually Goes Wrong on Location With a Voluminous Dress?

Q. Won’t a lightweight dress make the photos look cheap?
A. Not at all. What defines a photo’s texture isn’t the weight of the fabric — it’s how light passes through it and how it moves. A light tulle dress lets light filter through and changes shape with every step, so on the street, it often photographs with more character than a heavier dress.
Q. Do sneakers actually go with a wedding dress?
A. They do. In fact, it’s becoming something of a standard look for street pre-wedding shoots. With a full-length dress, your feet barely show up in standing shots anyway, and when sneakers peek out during a running or sitting shot, they add exactly the feeling of “a day spent playing around this city.”
Q. Won’t running damage the dress?
A. Running the amount a normal shoot involves isn’t a problem. Forcing a run in a dress with too long a hem is actually dangerous, since you could step on it — so if you want running shots, just let us know beforehand, and we’ll recommend a dress with the right length and weight.
Q. Can I still do a street shoot with my own voluminous dress?
A. Yes, you can — and we don’t charge a bring-your-own-dress fee. In that case, we’ll adjust by planning a route with less distance to cover and keeping action shots to a minimum. If you haven’t settled on a dress yet, though, considering one you can actually move in first will open up a lot more of what we can shoot.
